One of the most crucial parts of working in any area of the creative industry is to network. Finding jobs and clients is through meeting new people in the industry. Before the digital era this would have been done by meeting people through other mutual people, going to creative events like exhibitions where other creative people go and through working on different jobs, you will expand your network of people that you meet, if you are a stylist and have met a talented photographer even if you did not need a photographer yet you would take their contact details and still communicate with them so they know you are keen to work with them in the future.
It has been made easier for more people to connect with other creatives with the use of Linkedin and Facebook. this is where you can look up people in the industry and send them messages if you with to collaborate of work with that certain person. its also a great way to network globally.
It will work in your favor to be kind to everyone you meet whilst working, from the receptionist to your clients, this will also help if you want recommendations and to be introduced to new people.
HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY
TIPS AND HOW TO...
It has its benefits, working your own hours, working with people and companies you want to work for and you are your own boss. working for yourself means you have more control in your life and can be very beneficial, only answering to your clients requests. However there are some disadvantages which are overlooked which can have a long term effect on you working as a freelancer.
If you work from home going for a walk or run before you start your day is a great way to kick of the day with a fresh head. spend some time during the day to work in an outside environment like a cafe, take frequent breaks, go for a quick walk.
Working on your own can lack a form of communication during your day. Listening to podcasts or the radio can help feel like you have someone with you, it acts as company just in the background whilst you work. Setting goals to have accomplished each day can help you keep motivated. Take regular quick breaks, get a cup of tea and a snack, but make sure you don’t get distracted and start procrastinating.
It could be a good idea to look for studio space to work in if you don’t already, you can rent small areas of studio space for reasonable prices depending on where you look. this can help give you a normal routine in the morning, the commute into work is used to help wake yourself up for the day ahead and also put you in the frame of mind to work. if you wake up and work from home your more likely to have a more lazy start to the day and will them be less motivated to get your work load done, but if you are working from home make sure your set up is in a well lit and bright room, this will help create a moe positive mood.
If you are freelancing you probably have spent most of the week working alone apart from meetings with the clients, making plans for your time off is essential to keep your mood positive and keeping the creative juices flowing. plan to see friends and family and surround yourself with people. it also gives yourself something to look forward to and will keep you motivated during the week. also think about doing things that can inspire you and let your creative mind wonder.
If you are lacking creativity, look to go to up and coming exhibitions and museums. maybe if you are a designer look at architecture and if you are a writer just get inspired by the everyday, visit a park or somewhere with a lot of colour. also documentaries can be a great source of inspiration.
