"IT’S IMPERATIVE THAT FEMALES LIFT EACH OTHER UP, HELP EACH OTHER OUT, LISTEN TO

ONE ANOTHER AND COLLABORATE!"

EMMA REGOLINI IS AN AUSTRALIAN BASED DIGITAL ARTIST WHO HAS JUST GRADUATED FROM UNIVERSITY AFTER STUDYING A BACHELOR OF COMMERCE HER MAJOR BEING IN MARKETING AND ADVERTISING. SHE COMES FROM A CREATIVE FAMILY WITH HER SISTER BEING THE DIRECTOR IN AN ADVERTISING COMPANY.  WHIST FINISHING HER THESIS PAPER SHE CONTINUES TO CREATE AND WORK WITH CLIENTS PRODUCING NEW ART WORK.

WHAT DO YOU DO AND HOW DID YOU GET INTO IT?

I AM A DIGITAL ARTIST. I APPLY LINE-BASED AESTHETIC OVER IMAGES THAT I FIND VISUALLY ENGAGING OR INTRIGUING. I ALSO DO COLLAGE WORK, BASIC ANIMATION AND ABSTRACT HAND DRAWN PIECES FOR CLIENTS. I WAS REALLY BORED ONE DAY AT UNIVERSITY IN CLASS AND THOUGHT WHY NOT MERGE MY ACADEMIC WORK WITH A CREATIVE EXECUTION AD SEE WHERE THEY CAN INTERSECT AND CREATE VALUE FOR BRANDS.

WHAT DID YOU STUDY AT UNIVERSITY?

I JUST GRADUATED FROM MY BACHELOR OF COMMERCE WITH A DOUBLE MAJOR IN MARKETING AND ADVERTISING AND NOW I'M WRITING MY THESIS PAPER, WHICH WILL TAKE A YEAR AT CURTIN UNIVERSITY IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA.

DO YOU THINK A DEGREE IS NECESSARY IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRIES?

I THINK HAVING A DEGREE GIVES YOU A MUCH STRONGER BACKING FOR A JOB APPLICATION, PROFESSIONAL WRITING AND COMMUNICATION (I.E. IF YOU HAD TO WRITE AND BRIEF OR PROPOSAL OR EVEN JUST EMAIL COMMUNICATION WITH CLIENTS) AND ALSO GIVES YOU A MORE FULLY DEVELOPED UNDERSTANDING OF AN INDUSTRY FROM AN ANALYTICAL PERSPECTIVE. I REALLY THINK THAT A DEGREE OR TYPE OF EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM GIVES YOU A STRONGER UNDERSTANDING OF FRAMEWORKS AND PRACTICES, WHICH YOU’LL BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY IN THE WORKPLACE TO BUILD FROM AND INNOVATE.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM WHEN DESIGNING AND WHERE DO YOU SOURCE IMAGERY?

BECAUSE A LOT OF MY WORK IS LINE-BASED I DRAW A LOT OF INSPIRATION FROM THE CONTOURS OF SHAPES LIKE THE FEMALE FORM AS WELL AS FORMATIONS IN ARCHITECTURE, TEXTILE PATTERNS AND TATTOO ART. I SOURCE A LOT OF MY IMAGERY FROM TUMBLR AND OTHER INSTAGRAM ACCOUNTS OF CREATIVES, PHOTOGRAPHERS, FASHION LABEL ACCOUNTS AND A LOT FROM CONTENT CURATION PAGES SUCH AS @C__L__O

HOW IS YOUR PERSONALITY REFLECTED IN YOUR WORK?

TO BE HONEST SOMETIMES IT IS QUITE HARD TO REALLY COMMUNICATE MY PERSONALITY THROUGH LINES BUT I USUALLY COMMUNICATE MY MOOD, STATE OF WELL-BEING OR THOUGHTS THROUGH THE CAPTION OR THROUGH THE TYPE OF LINES ON THAT DAY I.E. IF I’M TIRED I’LL QUITE OFTEN TO A SIMPLE EDIT WITH FEW LINES, OR THE EDIT OF THE EDIT OF THE DARK COMPLEXION WOMAN WITH AN OCEAN IN THE BACKGROUND, THE CAPTION IS “CALMING AN ANXIOUS SEA,” I WAS MEDITATING THE DAY BEFORE I WENT BACK TO UNIVERSITY BECAUSE I WAS QUITE ANXIOUS ABOUT THE WORKLOAD FOR MY THESIS.

DID YOU KNOW YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO OWN YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

YES, FROM AN EARLY AGE I’VE NEVER REALLY WANTED TO WORK FOR ANYONE IN A FULL TIME POSITION. (I MEAN I HAVE NUMEROUS PART TIME JOBS WITH A BOSS BUT THAT’S A BIT DIFFERENT) I THINK THAT I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO HAVE THE FREEDOM AND FLEXIBILITY TO CHOOSE MY WORK, PROJECTS AND CLIENTS. CURRENTLY, I CONSULT WHILE I’M STILL STUDYING HOWEVER ONCE I’M FINISHED I THINK I’LL GO INTO FULL TIME CONSULTING DEPENDING ON THE ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT.

IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOU THAT GIRLS SUPPORT EACH OTHER IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY?

ABSOLUTELY. I THINK THAT’S IT’S IMPERATIVE THAT FEMALES LIFT EACH OTHER UP, HELP EACH OTHER OUT, LISTEN TO ONE ANOTHER AND COLLABORATE, EVEN IF IT JUST MEANS PASSING ON A CONTACT OR SHARING RESOURCES. I THINK THAT IN THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY IT’S VERY EASY TO HAVE YOUR WORK GROUPED AND CATEGORIZED BY MALE- DOMINANT FIGURES, BUT I THINK THAT A LOT OF FEMALE WORK HAS THE POWER TO TRANSCEND CATEGORIES AND STEREOTYPES AND I THINK THAT THIS CAN ONLY REALLY BE ACHIEVED WHEN WOMEN SUPPORT AND BACK EACH OTHER.

WAS THERE A DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER?

I GUESS LANDING COLLABORATIONS WITH THE UPSIDE, GRITTY PRETTY AND SOME INFLUENCER'S HAVE DRAWN A LOT OF FOLLOWERS TO MY PAGE, WHICH IS ALWAYS HANDY IN SPREADING THAT BRAND AWARENESS I WOULDN’T SAY THESE ARE DEFINING BECAUSE I HAVE SOME PRETTY COOL PROJECTS IN THE TIM ELINE FOR THIS YEAR BUT I THINK THEY’RE STILL IMPORTANT TO CELEBRATE NONETHELESS.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE IMAGE YOU HAVE PRODUCED?

CONSTELLATION COMPLEXION ‘READ HER SKIN’ TAMINA SWAN BY ANYA HOLDSTOCK.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY?

I LIKE THAT THE INDUSTRY NOW IS VERY DIVERSIFIED AND COLLABORATIVE. I LOVE WHEN BRANDS OR OTHER CREATIVES IN INTERIOR DESIGN OR RETAIL DESIGN REACH OUT TO SHARE IDEAS, STORIES OR MEANINGS BEHIND THEIR WORK. I ALSO REALLY LOVE THE ADOPTION OF MULTI-MEDIA EXECUTIONS OF WORK, CAMPAIGNS OR PROJECTS BECAUSE IT MAKES ME FEEL MORE INVOLVED IN THE ‘CREATIVE’ REALM RATHER THAN AN OUTSIDER BECAUSE I’M SELF TAUGHT AND COME FROM A MARKETING BACKGROUND.

I THINK AS A YOUNG CREATIVE, I FEEL LIKE SOME BRANDS CAN USE YOU LIKE YOU’RE DISPOSABLE. I’VE FOUND MYSELF FRUSTRATED WHEN YOU AGREE TO CREATE CONTENT OR WORK FOR A BRAND/INFLUENCER AND ONCE YOU DO THEY DISREGARD THE WORK AND NEVER CONTACT YOU BACK. I’VE ALSO FOUND THAT INSTEAD OF LOOKING AT THE QUALITY OR UNIQUENESS OF YOUR WORK, BRANDS SOLELY LOOK AT YOUR FOLLOWING. WHICH, WHEN YOU’RE STARTING OUT, CAN BE REALLY TOUGH WHEN PROPOSING AN IDEA OR COLLABORATION FOR A CLIENT. I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED OTHER ‘QUALIFIED’ CREATIVES OR GRAPHIC DESIGNERS MESSAGE ME OR COMMENT ON POSTS TO SAY THAT MY WORK IS INVALID OR RIDICULOUS BECAUSE IT’S JUST LINES ON AN IMAGE. I KNOW IT’S JUST SOCIAL MEDIA BUT I STILL FEEL PRETTY ATTACKED AT TIMES.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE AND DISLIKE ABOUT THE CREATIVE INDUSTRY?

LAST YEAR I GOT OFFERED TO SIGN TO A SMALL CREATIVE AGENCY. AS I WAS IN THE PROCESS OF AGREEING TO CERTAIN TERMS, THE TEAM CHANGED THE TERMS WITHOUT INFORMING ME, MEANING A BIGGER CUT WOULD BE TAKEN FROM MY EARNED AMOUNT AND I WOULD HAVE NO CONTACT WITH THE CLIENT SO I COULDN’T EXPAND MY PROFESSIONAL NETWORK. I ONLY FOUND OUT WHEN A CURRENT CLIENT CONTACTED ME SAYING THAT THE PRICE FOR WORK I HAD DONE FOR HER WOULD TRIPLE ($) INTO THE FUTURE. IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE, I FELT REALLY NAIVE BUT LUCKILY I HAVE A MENTOR WHO HELPED ME SORT IT ALL OUT WHICH WAS A SAVING GRACE BECAUSE I WAS COMPLETING MY FINAL YEAR OF STUDIES AND IT WAS ALREADY REALLY STRESSFUL.

WHEN GROWING UP DID YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANTED TO DO?

WHEN I WAS IN YEAR 4 I SAID I WANTED TO BE AN ARTIST AND AT THE AGE OF 10 IT WAS A CEO AND HAS

BASICALLY REMAINED EVER SINCE. I GUESS IT HAS EVOLVED TO BEING MY OWN CEO. OVER THE YEARS I’VE COME TO REALISE I WON’T BE STUCK IN ONE JOB FOREVER, SEEING THE GIG ECONOMY LANDSCAPE CONTINUOUSLY CHANGE, I THINK IT SHOWS THAT CREATIVES ESPECIALLY WILL MOVE AROUND TO WORK ON DIFFERENT PROJECTS, AND THIS IS SOMETHING WHICH REALLY EXCITES ME. I REALLY EMBRACE CHANGE, SO I WOULD LOVE TO JUMP FROM PROJECT TO PROJECT WITH DIFFERENT BRANDS AND CAMPAIGNS; I THINK IT WOULD DEMAND FOR YOU TO BE ADAPTIVE AND ALWAYS PUSHING YOUR LIMITS CREATIVELY.

IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS, WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE DOING?

DEAD. KIDDING I WOULD PROBABLY BE IN CAMPAIGN MANAGEMENT OR BRAND MANAGEMENT IN A MARKETING CONTEXT. I WOULD MOST PROBABLY BE LOOKING TO WORK IN MARKETING AND BRANDING WITH FASHION BRANDS IN THE LUXURY INDUSTRY WHICH I FIND A LOT MORE INTRIGUING RATHER THAN BRANDS IN MASS MARKETING AND COMMERCIALIZATION WHICH MAKES ME WANT TO RIP MY EYEBALLS OUT.

IN 10 YEARS WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU WILL BE AND WHAT DO YOU WANT TO HAVE ACCOMPLISHED?

HOPEFULLY CONSULTING FOR LUXURY BRANDS IN THE RETAIL BRAND EXPERIENCE, CREATIVE AND MARKETING SPACE. I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO WORK WITH OTHER PROFESSIONALS OF DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES TO CREATE RETAIL SPACES, WHICH IMMERSE SHOPPERS, EXECUTE CAMPAIGNS TO LAUNCH NEW PRODUCTS OR CHANGE NEGATIVE BRAND PERCEPTIONS. I’M HOPING TO DEVELOP A MENU OF SKILLS SO THAT I WOULD BE ABLE TO SUIT CLIENT’S NEEDS IN MANY AREAS. ONCE I’VE ACHIEVED THIS I WILL WORK ON PROJECTS SERVING TO GIVE BACK OR AID SOCIAL ISSUES LOCALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY. I’D LOVE TO GO TO UNDER DEVELOPED COUNTRIES TO TEACH LOCAL SHOP OWNERS HOW TO USE SIMPLE MARKETING TOOLS TO BOOST SALES.
